Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from corners in the first half to place their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the scores five minutes after the defender's first goal, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of chances, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to ensure Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, instructing the match official to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates the manager's team up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and are half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in role at both ends of the field

After a uninspiring weekday performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a only two shots on goal, Frank chose the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his second in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defensive duties, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have faded somewhat and supporters flocked to the gates after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home won't be a massive concern for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two recognised centre-forwards - had netted just one league goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to add to that poor tally on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, even with having room and time to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, too, was unable to make an impact after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. The majority of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly whipped dangerous balls into the Spurs penalty area.

The Toffees: Moyes' men travel to Sunderland in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: The London club go to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round League Cup tie against the Magpies.
