Pat Cummins Poised for a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series
Pat Cummins has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.
The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.
Speculation had been growing that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.
Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on November 21 in Western Australia.
Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.
"We're aware that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations involved, aside from his injury, but other factors as well," the selector added.
"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he will feature a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."
Injury History
The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.
He has a history of recurring issues, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.
Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the Ashes.
Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.
Contingency Plans
In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.
The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."
"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.
"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
